Mentavate vs ChatGPT and Claude: same models, different job

Written for people who've already asked the obvious question: why wouldn't I just use the chat tool I already pay for?

The honest bit first

ChatGPT and Claude can produce anything Mentavate produces. Same class of model, no secret sauce. If you can sit down, describe your situation clearly and ask for exactly what you need, you don't need Mentavate for that task.

The difference is what happens when you can't do that. When you're stuck, the blank box is the block. Mentavate removes every decision between "I'm frozen" and something small enough to actually do.

Same input, two different answers

Here's a real stuck moment: "I have to write the Q3 update and I've opened the doc six times."

Typical general assistant

That's a really common experience, and it doesn't mean anything is wrong with you! Here are a few strategies that might help:

1. Clarify your audience. Before writing, consider who will read the update and what decisions they need to make…

2. Try an outline. Break the update into wins, risks, and asks. Some people find bullet points less intimidating than prose…

3. Set a timer. A 25-minute focused block can help build momentum. Would you like me to draft an outline for you?

Useful. Also four decisions, one question back to you, and a pep line — while you're frozen.

The real block

You don't have the Q3 numbers in front of you, so every attempt stalls at the first sentence.

Do this now

Open the Q3 dashboard and copy the three top-line numbers into the empty doc.

About 2 minutes.

No question back. No encouragement. One thing your hands can do.

One messy meeting brief, three tools

This is the harder case: not a clean task, but the state you're actually in after a meeting — half-remembered, several people, one real deadline buried in it.

The same messy input

ok so the meeting. sarah wants "something on Q3 before Thursday" but also mentioned the pricing thing? and finance need numbers from me at some point. i said i'd circle back to james. i have no idea what i actually agreed to do and it's tuesday

Typed exactly like that — no tidying up, no prompt.

Mentavate — Decoder
What's actually being asked
A Q3 write-up for Sarah, in her hands before Thursday.
Things that matter
  • Thursday is the only stated deadline in the whole thing.
  • Finance need numbers from you — same numbers the Q3 write-up needs.
Not clear from this
  • Whether pricing belongs in the Q3 update or is a separate ask.
  • What you agreed to send James.
  • What format Sarah expects — doc, deck or a message.
Safe to ignore for now
James. Nothing in this has a date on it, and Thursday does.
Do this now
Send Sarah one line: "For Thursday — doc or a few bullets, and does it include pricing?"
About 2 minutes.

Fixed blocks. Names what's unclear instead of guessing. One thing to do now.

Illustrative responses, shortened. Mentavate runs on the same class of frontier model — the difference is the framing and the fixed output shape, not the weights.

Where the difference actually lives

1. A blank box is the block

Using a general assistant well takes three executive-function steps before you get any help: notice what's wrong, decide what you want from it, and phrase the request. Those are exactly the steps that stop working when you're stuck. Mentavate never asks "what's your task?" — it asks what's stopping you, and picks the shape of the answer for you.

2. The output shape doesn't move

Predictability is the feature. Every Move returns the same small structure, in the same order, every time. You don't have to read a response to find out what kind of response it is. Variable output is one more thing to process.

3. It refuses to be motivational

"You've got this", exclamation marks, hedging and therapy voice are banned in every Move's instructions. For a lot of ND adults that register reads as noise, or as being managed. You don't have to ask for it to stop, in every new conversation.

4. No prompt maintenance

You could write the prompt that does this. You'd rewrite it every session, it would drift as the conversation grew, and you'd need to be composed enough to set it up on a bad day. Mentavate is that prompt, kept — plus granularity control, tone registers, and the action shapes that have worked for you before feeding into the next suggestion.

Step by step, side by side

Toggle the tools you actually use. Each row is a step in getting from stuck to moving — the dot marks how much of that step lands on you.

When you should just use ChatGPT or Claude

Plainly: most of the time. They're better than Mentavate at all of this.

  • Research, comparisons, and anything that needs reading around a subject
  • Writing or editing long documents
  • Code
  • Brainstorming, where more options is the point
  • Any task where you already know what you want and can ask for it

Mentavate is for the narrow, awful middle: you know what the task is, you know it matters, and you cannot make yourself begin. That's a different problem from not knowing how, and it needs a different shape of answer.

Questions people actually ask

Can't I just prompt ChatGPT to do this?

Yes. If you write a careful prompt — one physical step, under two minutes, no motivational language, name the real block not the stated task — you'll get something close. The catch is that you have to write it every session, it drifts over a conversation, and you have to be composed enough to write it in the first place. Mentavate is that prompt, kept, on a screen that asks you one question.

Which model does Mentavate use?

Frontier models — the same class of model you'd use in ChatGPT or Claude. We're not claiming a secret better model. The value is in the framing, the fixed output shape, and the enforced voice, not the weights.

Is Mentavate a chatbot?

No. There's no conversation to maintain and no thread to scroll back through. You put in what's stuck, you get a fixed, small structure back. If you want to keep going, you get the next step — not a reply to answer.

Do I need an account?

Not for Unsticker or Estimator. Both are free and unlimited with no sign-up. An account exists so Mentavate can remember which action shapes actually worked for you, and so Pro Moves can be unlocked.

The fastest way to judge it

Take the thing you're currently avoiding, put it into Unsticker, then put the same sentence into ChatGPT. Two minutes, no account, no card.
